Despite efforts by concerned family members and friends to help him overcome homelessness and addiction, former Nickelodeon star Tylor Chase has returned to the streets in Riverside, California.
Chase, 36, was placed on an involuntary 72-hour psychiatric hold last week and taken to a hospital.
Former Mighty Ducks star Shaun Weiss is among Chase’s friends who’ve been trying to help.
On Monday, Weiss told TMZ the plan was for the struggling Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide alum to be transported to a rehab facility. Instead, Chase was unexpectedly released from the hospital and wandered back onto the streets.
“They were supposed to hold him and then transport him to a detox facility that we had arranged,” Weiss told the outlet. “Instead, they let him out without contacting any of us.”
Weiss and intervention influencer Jacob “Jake” Harris have been trying to help Chase get clean. Last week, Harris convinced a mental health crisis team to evaluate the former actor. They placed him on a 5150 hold for 72 hours after determining he was a danger to himself or others.
But Weiss said instead of making sure Chase remained in a medical facility until he could be taken to rehab, he was released.
Harris, who owns a business in Riverside, looked for Chase after he left the hospital. He found the actor on the streets and reported back to Weiss. They contacted the crisis team again and the workers found Chase “smoking meth during the evaluation with no shoes or jacket in the freezing cold,” Weiss said.
Weiss posted a video on Instagram on Monday, Dec. 29, to let fans know how Chase is doing.
He said, “Tyler has to want to go to treatment. All the resources are available to him, and it’s very frustrating because there is no system in place to help people like this, and our only option now is to what? Watch him wither away on the street?”
A frustrated Weiss admitted, “We don’t really know what to do.”
While friends and family members are concern about Chase, Riverside Police Department spokesman Ryan Railsback said because of state laws, they are prohibited from forcing the actor to get long-term help.
“We can’t kidnap him,” Railsback said.
Chase was a child star and played Martin Qwerly on Ned’s Declassified from 2004 to 2007. According to his IMDb page, he hasn’t worked in the entertainment industry since 2011.
A fan recorded video of the disheveled actor at a strip mall in Riverside back in September. The video went viral earlier this month, causing concern among Chase’s fans and his former co-stars.
In response, Ned’s Declassified alum Daniel Curtis Lee went to Riverside to find Chase. He took him out to eat, checked him into a hotel, and shared video of the two together on social media.
But on Christmas day, an emotional Lee uploaded a video to TikTok saying Chase was not doing well. The Neighborhood Talk Instagram account gathered all of Lee’s videos here.
“We got him into the hotel and just that night, I received a call from management,” said Lee. He told his followers the hotel room had been trashed — the microwave was in the tub, and the refrigerator had been turned over.
“I just feel so devastated,” he said. “I am at a loss and his family told me that they had tried the hotel thing before and it didn’t work.”
