He was recently described as a “media god” by Forbes. But long before Charlamagne tha God became a radio giant — and signed a $200 million contract with iHeartMedia — he was Wendy Williams’ protégé.

Charlamagne, born Lenard McKelvey, worked with Williams from 2006 to 2008 on “The Wendy Williams Experience” at WBLS radio in New York.

In an interview on the Dec. 22 episode of radio personality Angie Martinez’s “IRL” podcast, Charlamagne, 47, discussed his early days in radio.

The subject turned to Williams when Martinez asked Charlamagne if he had any regrets.

“Absolutely, 100 percent, especially when I used to work with Wendy,” Charlamagne responded [at the 18:40 mark]. “With Wendy, I was really compromising myself for a position. Like, I was really the pit bull. Purposely, that was my job and she would be like ‘Get them! I want you to get that person.'”

He said Williams ordered him to target certain celebrities. At the time, she was making the transition to television and wanted to boost her profile.

“My conscience would be like ‘why?’ The one I always remember is Kelly Rowland. She was like, ‘Get her.’  … I was like, ‘Why? What did Kelly Rowland do?'” he recalled.

“I think I came up with this angle, like we both know how it feels to be sidekicks. So I’m a sidekick to Wendy. She’s a sidekick to Beyoncé. Just straight stupid, disrespectful s–t for no reason,” he sais.

Years later, he came face-to-face with Rowland when she visited “The Breakfast Club.”

“Immediately, I apologize to her before she even walked in the studio and when we got on air. I wrote about that story in my book because I always tell people, don’t compromise yourself for a position,” he explained.

Earlier this year, Charlamagne rallied behind Williams to bring attention to her restrictive guardianship, and to refute a claim her court-appointed guardian made in a court filing that she is “cognitively impaired” from dementia.

Then on Jan. 16, Williams called into “The Breakfast Club” and told Charlamagne, “I am not cognitively impaired… But I feel like I am in prison.”

Martinez asked him if he is still in contact with Williams.

“She called me on my birthday over the summer, but I haven’t spoken to her since then,” he responded.

Some of Williams’ detractors have said she is now facing “karma” after making a career of gossiping about others.

Martinez asked Charlamagne if he believes “some of that about the karma.”

“Yes, absolutely,” he said.

“Sitting with Wendy earlier this year, Wendy literally said to us at the table, ‘I think I’m in the position I’m in because of how I used to talk about people.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean? Karma?’ and Wendy mentioned God,” he said. “I’d never heard Wendy mention God ever in my life.”
