Saturday Night Live paid tribute to Rob Reiner one week after the filmmaker and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were killed in Los Angeles.

During the Saturday, Dec. 20 episode, the NBC sketch series took a moment to remember Rob, who was one of the show’s first hosts.

Just before the episode ended, a title card appeared on screen showing an image of the late director from the 1970s when he appeared on SNL.

Reiner hosted the show on Oct. 25, 1975, during the third episode of the first season, according to IMDb. Anne Beatts, Chevy Chase, and Al Franken wrote the episode.

The then-All In the Family star took the stage as a lounge singer and appeared in a sketch about a cheating couple with his then-wife Penny Marshall and comedian John Belushi. SNL uploaded video of the sketch to its YouTube page in 2017.

Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead in their Brentwood neighborhood mansion on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14.

That night, the couple’s youngest son Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested several miles away near USC “without incident,” Los Angeles authorities said at a news conference last week.

He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special enhancement in the stabbing deaths of his parents, and is being held without bail. The L.A. County district attorney confirmed his office is considering the death penalty.

Nick has a history of substance abuse, homelessness, and mental health issues. He made his first court appearance on Dec. 17, and was shown in courtroom sketches wearing shackles and a blue suicide prevention vest.

He did not enter a plea at his attorney’s request, and is scheduled to return to court for his arraignment on Jan. 7, 2026.

Outside court, the defense attorney asked the public to withhold judgment and let justice run its course.

“We ask that during this process you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to, not with a rush to judgment, not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity and with the respect that this system and this process deserves and the family deserves,” said attorney Alan Jackson.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office released its preliminary autopsy report last week, which said Rob and Michele died from “multiple sharp force injuries.” The manner of death was listed as homicide.

The couple’s older children, Jake and Romy Reiner, released a statement about the tragic killings.

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the statement read. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
