The trailer for the upcoming documentary film Beyond Ed Buck explores how a powerful political donor killed two gay Black men in his home, but wasn’t arrested for years.
“Ed Buck was hiding in plain sight,” one of the interview subjects says in the trailer released this week by ALLBLK, AMC Networks’ streaming service for Black TV and film.
Before he made headlines for the crimes, Buck was known as a wealthy political donor who contributed to the campaigns of Democratic politicians, including Hillary Clinton, Congressmen Ted Lieu and Adam B. Schiff, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

In 2017, Gemmel Moore was found dead inside Buck’s apartment but no charges were filed against Buck at the time. The death was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, but prosecutors declined to file charges.
After Moore’s death, multiple reports alleged that Buck had a history of bringing young, gay Black men to his home for sex and drugging them.
In 2019, a second Black man was found dead at Buck’s home, 55-year-old Timothy Dean of West Hollywood.
Buck was arrested in September of 2019, after years of complaints from activists.
He was found guilty in July 2021 on nine felony counts in federal court in Los Angeles, including charges that he injected his victims with methamphetamine in exchange for sex, NPR reported.
As the title says, the documentary goes beyond the murders of Moore and Dean and explores internalized homophobia as well as the obstacles LGBTQ+ Black and Brown people face in both their communities and society at large.
“We need to understand the ‘why’ — the root cause,” one of the other interview subjects says in the trailer.
The documentary film is co-executive produced by Jayce Baron and Pose star Hailie Sahar. It features interviews with Sahar, Raniyah Copeland (former President and CEO of Black AIDS Institute), Dr. Gregory Canillas (LGBTQ+ psychologist), George M. Johnson (award-winning author), Shar Jossell (journalist & media personality) and others.
Beyond Ed Buck starts streaming on ALLBLK on Thursday, Feb. 24.
