R&B singer Shanice Wilson has shared details about her recent health challenges.
She took to Instagram on Sunday, Sept. 8, to share in a video that three months ago she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with stage 1 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) — an early form of breast cancer.
“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to face in my life. But I know God is with me, and everything is going to go well,” she said in the video.
According to the American Cancer Society, DCIS is cancer that occurs in “cells that line the milk ducts of the breast.”

Shanice admitted she had not been getting regular mammograms and had gone 8 years without a screening. Then, in March of this year she felt a lump in one of her breasts and went to the doctor to get it checked out.
Following the mammogram, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and decided on an aggressive treatment plan.
“They told me they wanted to remove my breast. [I said] ‘Since you’re going to remove one, you might as well remove both because I want them to be the same. I don’t want anything popping up later in the other breast,’” she explained.
In the caption of her post, the “I Love Your Smile” singer noted how they found the disease early, and she urged her followers to be mindful of their health.
“Thank God I caught it early,” she wrote. “I wasn’t ready to talk about it then but I’m strong enough to talk about it now. Please everyone get checked.”
The 51-year-old thanked her husband, actor Flex Alexander, friends, and her medical team.
Alexander also took to Instagram, noting how he was “extremely proud” of his wife and called her a “superwoman.”
“Just had to say how extremely proud of wifey @shaniceonline I am! She took this head on like the SUPERWOMAN that she is!! Life throws us curve balls and we can either crumble or stand strong, I thought child birth was deep but that pales in comparison to the valley she’s come through,” wrote Alexander.
Shanice rose to fame in the early 1990s, climbing to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart with “I Love Your Smile.” She also contributed to the soundtracks of the films Boomerang, The Meteor Man, as well as the TV show Beverly Hills, 90210.
