Patrick Howley, a right-wing reporter who’s done work for Breitbart News and The Daily Caller, thinks the CMT Music Awards have a race problem — they’re becoming too Black.
Just for background, the show aired on April 11, and was co-hosted by Anthony Mackie and nominee Kane Brown. The awards also featured a performance by R&B singer Monica. But seeing Marvel Cinematic Universe star and New Orleans native Mackie on the CMT stage set Howley off.
“I don’t know who this Black guy is who’s hosting it. It’s supposed to be country music,” Howley vented in a clip posted on Twitter by Right Wing Watch. “No offense. Y’all have hip-hop, basketball. Just fly with your flock, bro.”

Howley then began to mock Black people adding that they should stay in their lane.
“The melanated people invented country music!” he said. “We was making country music in Wakanda before Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard done stole the Black man’s country music!”

Howley, who hosts an online show, was on a roll and added: “There were so many Black people there. Sorry to say, but so many Black celebrities who have nothing to do with country music and it’s like — why?”
“No disrespect to the funky brothers,” he added. “I love Earth, Wind & Fire, Run DMC, etc. But country music’s different… It’s not Wakanda.”
Despite Howley’s racist take on the show, the ratings for the CMT Awards were off the charts. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show averaged 5.33 million viewers on CBS. That was almost four times the 1.43 million viewers who watched the 2021 awards show when it aired on CMT, Paramount Network and MTV.
