Morris Chestnut is expressing gratitude to fans for watching Watson following the show’s cancellation by CBS after two seasons.
News emerged on Friday, March 27, that the medical mystery series would not return for a third season, as previously reported.
Chestnut released a video statement on Instagram Monday, praising the show’s cast and crew, and thanking fans for their support.
“Hey everybody, as the world has heard, unfortunately Watson will not be coming back for season 3. Yes, it’s disappointing, but that’s the way the showbiz beast is,” he began.
“That’s the nature of the beast and you have to take the good with the bad,” the actor continued. “But I wanted to hop on here real quick and say thank you so much to all of the fans who supported and watched the show. Your support of our show did not go unrecognized and we truly, truly appreciated those of you who tuned in each week to find the mystery in the case of the week.”
Chestnut, who also served as an executive producer on the show, additionally recognized the cast and crew for giving their “blood, sweat and tears” to the production. He urged fans to be on the lookout for the cast as they pivot to other projects.
Watson premiered to impressive ratings in January 2025, after the AFC Championship game. Once the series moved to its regular Sunday night time slot, it averaged 6.79 million viewers per episode in its first season, according to Nielsen figures provided by CBS.
The second season debuted in October 2025 after getting moved around the schedule following a string of other cancellations by CBS, including The Equalizer; S.W.A.T.; FBI: Most Wanted; and FBI: International.
Ratings for the second season of Watson have continued to slip, with the drama averaging 2.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen data.
The series is based on 19th century characters created by late British author and physician Arthur Conan Doyle.
Chestnut leads the cast as Dr. John Watson, who resumes his medical career as head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Eve Harlow, Peter Mark Kendall, Inga Schlingmann, Ritchie Coster, and Rochelle Aytes also star.
Each week, Dr. Watson and his team solve medical mysteries other doctors have failed to unravel.
Watson is produced by CBS Studios. The final episode of the medical mystery is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 3, at 10/9c.
