“LAFD personnel surveyed the City of Los Angeles by land, air, and sea following the magnitude 4.7 earthquake at 7:28 AM PDT, centered 7 kilometers north of Malibu, California. No significant infra/structure damage or injuries have been noted within the City of Los Angeles. LAFD Earthquake Mode is now complete,” said the LAFD.

The magnitude of the quake was initially reported as 5.1 but later lowered to 4.7.

According to local news station ABC7, the shaking was felt up to 60 miles away, going as far south as Newport Beach, roughly 67 miles from Malibu.

The station also shared a video on X, from insides its studio in Glendale when the quake struck while they were broadcasting the morning news.

Seconds before the earthquake began, residents across the region received an emergency “shake alert” on their mobile phones telling them to “Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself.”

The technology is new and is “designed to detect quakes at their epicenter and send out electronic warnings faster than the shaking can radiate outward through the ground,” state officials have said.
