The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined the cause of death for social media personality Kevin Samuels.

The autopsy report obtained Monday by TMZ said Samuels died from hypertension or high blood pressure, with his death listed as a result of natural causes.

The report noted that “evidence of hypertension includes a heart whose chambers are thicker than normal,” and said Samuels had been taking Atenolol, a medication used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain, according to HealthLine.

Samuels was a YouTube star who became known for his controversial takes on relationships. He died on May 5 at the age of 57.

The Atlanta Police Department said at the time officers were called to an apartment on East Paces Ferry Road NE regarding a “person down.”

In the 911 call released by the city of Atlanta, a woman made the call from Samuels’ apartment and said “he’s not breathing.” The woman was frantic and told the dispatcher to send help immediately. She said she was a nurse and continued to give Samuels CPR, but his condition was worsening.

“He has an irregular rhythm. It’s probably his heart,” the woman said. “It’s Kevin f—ing Samuels.”

Samuels had over 1 million subscribers on his YouTube page. He described himself as an “image consultant, life and style coach” and was a self-proclaimed relationship guru.

He regularly offered hot takes about relationships and dating on social media, but often sparked anger for comments many perceived as attacks on Black women.

In an April video, he faced intense backlash after labeling women who are over age 35 and unmarried as “leftovers.”

The Root called Samuels out saying, “Statements like these reinforce sexist beliefs that we alone carry the burden and shame of singledom. Not to mention, Black women are constantly being reminded about the discriminatory nature of modern-day dating.”
