Claressa Shields is fouling out with fans for comments she made on social media, after the boxing legend Laila Ali joked she would “think about” fighting Shields for the right price.

Ali spoke with reporters this weekend after the Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 3 fight. In a video posted online by Fight Hub TV, one reporter asked Ali about rumors she might go toe-to-toe with Shields.

The retired champion was quick on her feet with an answer.

“The rumor I heard was that I said, unless somebody had $15-$20 million, don’t even call me about this,” Ali responded before laughing. “I’m not trying to come back and fight, but if someone offered me that kind of money, I would actually have to think about it.”

Ali, 47, wasn’t done and asked, “Do I look like I could fight again?” The reporters responded, “Yes, yes, yes you do.”

“I think so too,” she quipped before laughing and walking away.

Shields, 30, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was the subejct of acclaimed film The Fire Inside.

She reacted to Ali’s comments with a post on the X platform early Sunday, July 13.

“Now @TheRealLailaAli I’m the GREATEST NOW! Be careful what you ask for! You know I’ve been wanting to make you eat your words! You not a better boxer than me & at 175 I’ll put you on your back! BEEN READY FOR YOU!” she posted

Hundreds of X users replied to the post, with many telling Shields she should be more respectful because Ali helped pave the way for women in boxing.

“Respectfully Laila is a legend and has been away from boxing for how long now… put some respect on her name,” one person replied.

“Stop trying to get clout off of Ali’s name,” someone else responded.

“She’s 47 years old. I love you Claressa, but come on now,” another person wrote.

“You’re women’s boxing’s Jake Paul not the GWOAT,” another person wrote, referring to Netflix’s controversial 2024 Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight.

“You talk too much… Full of vanity with a gross lack of humility… Overall, the buying public appreciates the more grounded athlete over the mouthy, disrespectful one,” someone else replied.

While few disputed the much younger Shields would probably win, some punched back by bringing up the current boxing champion’s feud with her reality star boyfriend Papoose’s estranged wife, rapper Remy Ma.

“Laila better than you and fighting her does nothing for your legacy. Go fight Remy!!” someone replied.

Remy and Claressa have been trading jabs on social media for months, but that’s a whole different story.
