Badu is best known for her hit singles including “Love of My Life (An Ode To Hip Hop),” “Bag Lady,” and “On & On.” She also set the stage as DJ of the “Soul Cyphers” at the Soul Train Awards.
Earlier this month, the Dallas Observer reported the Grammy-winning singer and songwriter is now fully independent and this year is releasing new music via her own Control FREAQ Records. It will be her first album in 15 years, since the 2010 LP New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh).
During an appearance at SXSW, Badu said she plans to use the label to help up-and-coming artists.
“I want all my artists to be successful. It will happen,” she explained. “They can be as famous or as underground as they want to be.”
Last year, Amazon Music streamed Kendrick Lamar’s one-night only “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends” show on Juneteenth from the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California
This year, fans will get to celebrate the holiday with Erykah Badu.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas learned about the Emancipation Proclamation — two and a half years after it was signed — marking the end of slavery in the U.S.
In June 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation declaring Juneteenth a federal holiday.
