Where’s Whoopi Goldberg? Not on The View this week. But the absence of the cornerstone commentator isn’t punative. As one panelist explained, Goldberg is being honored.

“We are all jealous of Whoopi today because she’s in Italy — I hope it’s 100 degrees,” Joy Behar said by way of explanation at the start of Monday’s show.  “She’s in Italy accepting an award for her book, Bits and Pieces, so she will be out this week.”

Behar will serve as moderator in Goldberg’s absence, while Ana Navarro joined the Hot Topics table for the Monday, June 23 show.

Goldberg posted to Instagram about her trip, with a photo showing herself accepting the publishing honor at the Taobuk Taormina International Book Festival.

While Goldberg was abroad, ABC News Washington correspondent and co-anchor of This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Jonathan Karl, joined The View to talk about the Iran conflict.

Karl fielded questions from Behar, Navarro, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin.

Among the questions the panel raised was whether the Iran nuclear sites were “obliterated,” as President Trump claimed, as well as the legality of the attack on the facilities, and the U.S. history with Iran’s nuclear program.

Hostin stated that Trump “potentially violated the War Powers Resolution” by initiating the strikes without the consent of Congress. “I believe this is certainly a clear violation of international law at the very least.”

Karl responded that presidents have been accused of doing that for decades without much accountability.

Behar called the situation “scary and confusing.”

Last week Goldberg raised eyebrows when she compared being Black in America to living under Iran’s oppressive regime.

“Every day we are worried. Do we have to be worried about our kids? Are our kids gonna get shot because they’re running through somebody’s neighborhood?” Goldberg said on June 18.

The backlash was immediate on social media, then late-night host Bill Maher said someone needs to “do something” about Goldberg. Despite the criticism, Goldberg also has many supporters.
