Tyra Banks is ready to sashay and smize into a new season of America’s Next Top Model.
Banks just announced cycle 25 of ANTM is in the works, although it’s unclear when or where the show will air.
The controversial modeling competition ended in 2018. But Banks — who created and hosted the show — says it’s time to bring it back.
She teases a return in the upcoming Netflix docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model.
“After the show, I had so many different ideas for my life. I’m obsessed with pivoting,” Banks says in the series, according to Entertainment Weekly, which got an early look at the series.
“I feel like my work is not done. You have no idea what we have planned for cycle 25,” she adds.
The three-part Netflix series premieres on Feb. 16, and includes interviews with Banks, former ANTM judges, executive producer Ken Mok, and several former contestants.
Netflix announced the series in January and Banks addressed some of the criticism she’s received for pushing the envelope on the show.
“I knew I went too far,” she said in the trailer. “It was very, very intense. But [fans] were demanding it and so we kept pushing more and more and more.”
Several former contestants accused Banks of “body shaming” in the trailer, and traumatizing aspiring models.
Cycle 6 winner, Dani Evans, said she experienced “horrific” pressure from Banks to close the gap in her front teeth.
“It was so f–ked up” Evans shared. “It’s a TV show to you guys, but this is my life.”
Former judge Jay Manuel also called out Banks. “I realized Tyra would do anything for the success of her show,” he said.
But a plus size model credited the diva with launching her career. “The only reason the door was opened to me was because of Tyra,” the woman said.
ANTM debuted in 2003, and was developed by Ken Mok and Kenya Barris. The show ran for 24 seasons, first on UPN and later The CW and VH1. It became a global hit, with multiple international spinoffs.
Among the contestants who carved out careers in the entertainment industry were Adrianne Curry (My Fair Brady); Winnie Harlow (Eyes of Wakanda); Yaya DaCosta (Chicago Med); and Eva Pigford, now known as Eva Marcille (All the Queen’s Men). Cycle 8 winner Jaslene González became a successful runway and print model.
Banks currently lives in Australia and runs her SMiZE & DREAM ice cream line and other business ventures.
She made the phrase “smize” popular on ANTM, short for “smile with your eyes.”
