Two people were found dead inside the Los Angeles home of director and actor Rob Reiner on Sunday afternoon.

Hours later, Reiner’s family confirmed that he and wife Michele Singer Reiner had died.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the family said in a statement to Variety.

Los Angeles police described the case as a “death investigation,” and said emergency personnel responded to the couple’s house in the 200 block of Chadbourne Avenue around 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14.

At a news conference just before 9 p.m. PT, police said they were waiting for a search warrant to look through the house for clues and to process the scene.

Deputy Chief Allen Hamilton of the LAPD spoke to reporters at the location in the city’s wealthy Brentwood area. Hamilton offered few details, and would only say the case is being handled by the department’s Robbery-Homicide Division.

Urban Hollywood 411 asked Hamilton if neighbors heard anything and he said “no.”

Hamilton noted that detectives were waiting for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office to send a van to the location. For now, the bodies remain inside the house.

Neighbors gathered at the location for information. One resident asked at the news conference if the area was safe, to which Hamilton replied “yes,” and said there was no suspect at large.

People magazine reported the couple’s son Nick Reiner is being questioned in connection with the case. Nick reportedly has a history of substance abuse and homelessness.

The LAPD’s Hamilton declined to comment on the report, and said no arrests had been made.

Reiner, 78, is a native of New York. He is perhaps best known for playing “Meathead” on the 1970s sitcom All in the Family as well as directing A Few Good Men and other acclaimed films.
