In a stunning display of pettiness, President Trump lashed out at pollsters, the media, big tech and his political opponents on Thursday, claiming they were conspiring to “steal the election” from him.

Speaking from the White House briefing room, Trump claimed fraudulent mail-in ballots were secretly being brought in to “engineer” his defeat and hand a win to former Vice President Joe Biden. The president singled out the predominantly Black cities of Detroit and Philadelphia, calling them “two of the most corrupt political places anywhere in our country.”

After witnessing Trump’s jaw-dropping behavior, Stephen Colbert tossed out his usual monologue and addressed the president’s baseless statements on Thursday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Dressed in a black shirt and black pants, Colbert delivered somber remarks that at times sounded like a eulogy.

“It’s also why I am dressed for a funeral — because Donald Trump tried really hard to kill something tonight,” Colbert said before mentioning Trump’s “nonsensical” claims of “illegal vote dumps” and corrupt election officials.

The late-night host was riled up by Trump’s statements, and said the president had made allegations of Democrats cheating in the 2016 presidential election as well.

“The guy does not have another gear — get a new act,” Colbert said as he clapped his hands together. “I mean he said the stuff back in 2016.”

Two minutes into his comments, the comedian took a long, deep pause for almost 15 seconds. “We all knew he would do this,” Colbert said while appearing visibly upset.

“What I didn’t know was that it would hurt so much. I didn’t expect this to break my heart. For him to cast a dark shadow on our most sacred right. From the briefing room in the White House — our house — not his. That is devastating,” Colbert continued.
