Silento is speaking out after he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his cousin.
In a statement sent to Urban Hollywood 411 by his PR manager, Chanel Hudson-O’Connor, the “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” rapper apologized to his family, fans, and supporters, and said he is “deeply sorry for the pain and disappointment” he caused.
However, there was no mention of the victim, Frederick Rooks III, in the statement. Rooks, 34, was shot multiple times and left to die on a street in Panthersville, Georgia on Jan. 21, 2021. Police found ten bullet casings near his body, prosecutors said.
Silento, born Ricky Lamar Hawk, was sentenced for the killing on Wednesday, June 11, immediately after he entered a guilty plea to the crime.
In a press release, the Dekalb County District Attorney’s office said the 27-year-old rapper pleaded guilty to charges of — voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and concealing the death of another person.
Prosecutors said mental illness played a role in the killing. No other motive was ever revealed, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Below is the full statement from Silento’s Manager:
I have spoken directly with Ricky (Silento), and he would like to extend his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out with prayers, words of encouragement, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
Ricky wants his family, fans, and supporters to know that he is deeply sorry for the pain and disappointment he has caused.
“I will continue to make music and work on becoming the best possible version of myself. I can’t reverse time, but I can serve the time I’ve been given lawfully and strive to positively contribute to whatever my new environment may be. I entered this industry as a teenager, often without proper guidance or direction. While that is not an excuse, it is part of my truth. I pray for growth, evolution, and the ability to find forgiveness—for myself and for this entire situation. God bless y’all.”
This statement marks a step toward healing and much-needed closure for everyone affected. We kindly ask the public to continue praying for all parties involved—especially Ricky—as he continues to battle severe mental health challenges.
Thank you for your continued compassion and understanding.
Chanel Hudson-O’Connor
PR Manager for Ricky “Silento”
