Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are reminding audiences that with love comes truth, trust and sometimes tragedy in the trailer for Ruth & Boaz, a modern-day retelling of the biblical love story of Ruth and Boaz.

The trailer opens with narration from  Phylicia Rashad, “Let me tell you a love story. The best love stories don’t start with fireworks.”

The project features music legend Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds in a supporting role, alongside Gregalan Williams, Nijah Brenea, Walnette Santiago, James Thomas, Christopher Broughton, Jermaine Dupri, and Chaundre Hall-Broomfield.

Ruth & Boaz is the first project released under Perry and Franklin’s multi-year, first-look deal with Netflix.

As previously reported, the partnership, announced in May 2024, will bring faith-based films to the streaming platform.

“I’m thrilled to kick off my partnership with DeVon Franklin with Ruth & Boaz,” Perry said in a statement. “The trailer is finally here, and I couldn’t be more excited for the world to get this first look at such a powerful love story. I can’t wait for audiences everywhere to experience the film when it arrives.”

Franklin echoed that sentiment, adding: “Tyler and I have been great friends for over 15 years, so when he called me to team up on movies that can uplift the human spirit, I jumped at the chance and we couldn’t have a better partner than Netflix to help us inspire the world.”

He added, “Ruth & Boaz has been a true labor of love, and I’m grateful to finally share this first look with the world. This classic story has held such deep meaning for me and so many others for generations. I’m beyond excited for audiences to see the trailer and to experience this film on Netflix when it’s released!”

Directed by Alanna Brown (Trees of Peace), the film follows a young woman who leaves Atlanta’s music scene behind for Tennessee, where she cares for an elderly widow. Along the way, she finds both the love of her life and the mother figure she never had.

But between the romance and family bond, the trailer hints at drama and heartbreak, including threats from what appears to be a music producer.

The screenplay comes from Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan (Play’d). Executive producers include Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, and Bart Lipton.

Ruth & Boaz begins streaming on Netflix Sept. 26.
