LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told reporters at the scene that the case is being handled by the department’s Robbery-Homicide Division.
“The Los Angeles Police Department is now conducting an investigation at this residence here on Chadbourne, and that investigation will continue over the coming days,” Hamilton said.
A few neighbors came outside during the press briefing and asked if the area was safe after the bodies were found. Hamilton said “yes,” but otherwise offered few details on the case.
The Reiner family released a statement on the couple’s deaths.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement read.
Tributes poured in from across the nation. Actress Kathy Bates, who won a best actress Oscar for her performance in Reiner’s 1990 film Misery, released a statement saying he “changed” her life.
“I’m horrified hearing this terrible news. Absolutely devastated. I loved Rob,” said Bates. “He was brilliant and kind, a man who made films of every genre to challenge himself as an artist. He also fought courageously for his political beliefs. He changed the course of my life.”
Bates also praised Reiner’s wife Michele and said she was a “gifted photographer.”
Actor Jerry O’Connell, who had a role in Reiner’s 1987 movie Stand By Me, shared a picture on Instagram and included the caption: “Love you, Rob.”
Former President Barack Obama also paid tribute to the slain couple.
“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” Obama wrote. “Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
