Was Meghan Markle trying to tell the world something deeper five years ago, when she cryptically told Oprah Winfrey the British royals were “willing to lie” to protect their own.
This weekend marked the five-year anniversary of the Oprah with Meghan and Harry sit-down interview.
Instagram account Black British Culture reposted a controversial clip from the interview on Saturday. The video showed Meghan famously telling Oprah about the royals, “They were willing to lie to protect other members of the family, but they weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.”

As of this afternoon, the post had been liked more than 12,700 times. And nearly 200 people commented, with many calling out the royal family.
“Meghan was trying to tell us the entire time,” one person wrote.
“I love how this aged because the Royal House of Windsor is currently a s–t show and a joke,” someone else shared.
“…people called her a liar and all sorts. Who’s the liar now??,” another person wrote.
The original post was uploaded by a Meghan and Harry fan using the Instagram handle @aliciaj1985 and was captioned: “And recent revelations confirm they told no lies.”
The post came amid a widening scandal surrounding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, who was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office on Feb. 19, his 66th birthday, following the release of the Epstein files.
British authorities are investigating if Andrew shared sensitive information with the late Jeffrey Epstein, while the royal served as the U.K.’s trade envoy.
Millions of files connected to Epstein, a convicted sex offender and American financier, were recently released by the U.S. Department of Justice. The files include a picture of Andrew hovering on all fours over an unidentified woman or girl.
The former prince has denied all accusations against him and said he never witnessed any wrongdoing by Epstein who died in federal custody after being accused of trafficking minors.
Andrew’s older brother, King Charles, released a statement expressing his “deepest concern” about the case and said “the law must take its course.”
As for the Oprah interview, it aired March 7, 2021, on CBS and in the U.K. the next day. The interview was one of the most-watched broadcasts of the year stateside, with 17.1 million viewers watching the initial broadcast, as previously reported.
The sit-down conversation was filmed in Santa Barbara County, California, a year after Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex announced their decision to step down as working members of the British royal family in January 2020.
