Reminders of Him romanced moviegoers and surpassed expectations at the weekend box office.

The romantic drama debuted with an impressive $18.2 million, Comscore reported Sunday. That was more than enough to beat analyst projections, which had the film opening in the $10 million range.

An adaptation of bestselling author Colleen Hoover’s novel by the same name, Reminders of Him stars Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers.

Withers is a former college wide-receiver, best known for starring in the horror thriller Him (2025) with Marlon Wayans.

Monroe previously had roles in Watcher (2022), Longlegs (2024), and Hulu’s The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (2025).

Reminders of Him centers on a budding romance between a woman rebuilding her life after serving time in prison for a car accident that killed her boyfriend, and a former NFL star who was forced into early retirement by an injury.

The film’s audience was made up mostly of women, with 80 percent of the tickets bought by female moviegoers.

Vanessa Caswill directed the drama from a script written by Hoover and Lauren Levine. Hoover’s novels It Ends with Us and Regretting You were also adapted into hit movies.

Although It Ends with Us is currently embroiled in a legal saga involving lead actress Blake Lively and director-lead actor Justin Baldoni.

Critics were divided on the new film and gave it a less than impressive 56 percent score out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nell Minor of Moviemom.com praised the performances, but called the drama a “Temu” version of a good romance movie.

Boston Globe critic Odie Henderson complained the film was “nonsensical.”

Becca Johnson of Nerdspin was more forgiving and wrote: “What it lacks in strong dialogue and surprises, it makes up for with emotion and charm.”

Peter Travers of The Travers Take complained it wasn’t “much of a movie.” On the flip side, Travers noted “the drama this time is all on the screen,” instead of in the courts.

Moviegoers were also split and gave the film a “B” CinemaScore in exit polling.

Overseas, Reminders of Him opened with $10 million, for a global total of $28.2 million. With an reported $25 million production budget, the Universal Pictures release should be profitable.

Elsewhere this weekend, Disney’s presentation of Pixar’s Hoppers held onto first place with $28.5 million in its second weekend in theaters. The animated science fiction comedy fell just 37 percent from its opening weekend tally of $45.3 million, according to Comscore.

Directed by Daniel Chong, the film features the voices of Piper Curda, Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, and Dave Franco.

As mentioned, Reminders of Him was second. Opening in third place was indie horror film Undertone with $9.3 million. Scream 7 made $8.3 million in its third weekend in theaters for a fourth place finish. GOAT rounded out the top five with $4.7 million in its fifth weekend.
