The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has responded after Teyana Taylor said she was “shoved” by a security guard on Sunday at the Oscars.
The incident happened when the cast of One Battle After Another and Warner Bros. executives gathered on stage to celebrate the film’s best picture win.
Videos posted on social media showed a visibly upset Taylor telling others on stage, “He literally shoved me.”
According to published reports, a security guard tried to prevent her from returning to the stage with Pam Abdy, co-CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, for a group photo.
After videos of Taylor saying she was pushed went viral, the academy addressed the confrontation.
“We were extremely upset to learn about the experience endured by Teyana Taylor at the end of the Oscars ceremony last night,” the academy said in a statement to Variety.
“We have worked with Teyana over the last several months during awards season, and she has been nothing short of remarkable, supportive, kind, and all about community,” the statement continued. “Though the incident was with our outside security firm SIS, the experience of every single guest is our responsibility. We have made it clear to them that this behavior is not acceptable.”
The security firm sent a statement to TMZ, saying it addressed the situation internally.
“During that interaction, there was incidental contact and we regret that the situation escalated. This is not the standard of professionalism we expect from our team, and we have addressed the matter internally to help ensure situations like this do not happen again,” the company said.
Taylor was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her performance as revolutionary fighter “Perfidia” in One Battle After Another.
The actress and singer faced criticism herself on social media after putting the film’s director, Paul Thomas Anderson, in a headlock as he walked to the stage to accept his Oscar for best picture.
The academy uploaded video on its YouTube page of the winner being announced in the category. The footage showed Taylor dashing to the stage with Anderson and grabbing an Oscar out of presenter Nicole Kidman’s hands that was intended for one of the producers.
People commenting under the video asked why Taylor was holding an Oscar she didn’t win. They described her behavior as “disgusting” and “over the top.”
