American history with a side of comedy. That’s the premise for a new HBO sketch comedy series from Emmy winner Larry David and the Obamas.
HBO announced the details on Thursday, July 10, saying the network has ordered six episodes of the untitled limited series.
Curb Your Enthusiasm creator, writer and actor David will star in the show, featuring comedy and interviews with his former castmates and other “noteworthy” guests, HBO said in a news release.
Jeff Schaffer and David will write the six episodes. Schaffer, who worked as a writer and director of Curb, is set to direct.

Curb Your Enthusiasm aired on HBO for 12 seasons between 2000 and 2024. In addition to David, the cast included Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, and others over the years.
Per HBO, former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary in a special way… “but then Larry David called.”
David and Schaffer will both serve as executive producers. The Obamas will co-executive produce through their Higher Ground production company alongside Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis.
“I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David,” Mr. Obama said in a statement.
“It’s hard to remember a time before Curb, or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life. We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial,” added Amy Gravitt, executive vice president and head of HBO and HBO Max Comedy Programming.
A premiere date for the series will be announced later.
We do have a question for the Obamas — were Emmy winners Dave Chappelle or Chris Rock not available?
