The first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Man on Fire television remake shows John Creasy making a fiery return.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II executive produces and leads the cast as a broken ex-mercenary out to avenge the death of his only friend, while protecting his fallen comrade’s daughter.

Netflix released the teaser on Tuesday, ahead of the action thriller’s April 30 release.

The video opens with Creasy arriving in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for “work.” What kind of work is unclear, but it includes gun battles and body blows.

Creasy is known for surviving bleak situations and he’ll be put to the test when he’s confronted by a small army of uniformed police officers and later sets off an explosive device in a prison.

“Let me just be clear, you’re not going to survive this,” he warns.

Abdul-Mateen is joined in the cast by Billie Boullet, Bobby Cannavale, Alice Braga, Scoot McNairy, and Paul Ben-Victor.

“Creasy is now plagued with intense PTSD. Determined to overcome his personal demons, he sets out on a path to redemption. But, before he can adjust to this new life, he finds himself back in the fire, fighting harder than ever,” according to the official description.

Netflix announced the series in March 2023, and launched a search for a lead actor.

Wonder Man star Abdul-Mateen landed the role after playing “Black Manta” in the DC Extended Universe, and Cal Abar in HBO’s Watchmen, which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actor in a limited series.

Kyle Killen (Halo, Awake and Lone Star) serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer of the 7-part series.

Steven Caple Jr. (Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, Creed II) executive produces and directs the first two episodes. Additional directors include Vicente Amorim (Ep 3 & 4), Clare Kilner (Ep 5 & 6), and Michael Cuesta (Ep 7).

The series is based on author A.J. Quinnell’s book series. The Man on Fire novel was published in 1980, followed by The Perfect Kill, The Blue Ring, Black Horn, and Message from Hell, which ended the series in 1996.

Netflix’s new thriller comes after the hit 2004 Man on Fire film from late director Tony Scott. Denzel Washington starred as Creasy and Dakota Fanning portrayed the nine-year-old girl he was hired to protect.

The 20th Century Fox film earned $130.8 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

While the movie was set in Mexico, the Netflix series shifts the action to South America.
