Eddie Murphy brought fans the iconic stand-up special Raw in 1987, now the comedy legend is bringing the real story behind his success to viewers in the upcoming Netflix documentary Being Eddie.
Debuting in November, the film will look back on Murphy’s four decade career, the streamer announced Tuesday, Oct. 14.
The doc will walk down memory lane and recount how Murphy shared a stage with Jerry Seinfeld at 17, was cast on Saturday Night Live right out of high school, and pivoted from TV to star in films like 48 Hrs. (1982), Trading Places (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Coming to America (1988), and his Oscar-nominated turn in Dreamgirls (2006) alongside Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, and Anika Noni Rose.
“From teen comedian to Hollywood legend, Eddie Murphy revisits his extraordinary showbiz ride with raw honesty and humor in this star-studded documentary,” the official description reads.

The documentary will feature some of Murphy’s famous friends dishing about him, including Seinfeld and Foxx, Dave Chappelle, Tracee Ellis Ross, Arsenio Hall, Kevin Hart, and SNL alums Chris Rock, Tracy Morgan, Pete Davidson, and current cast members Kenan Thompson and Michael Che.
Hollywood moguls Jeffrey Katzenberg and Jerry Bruckheimer will also share their thoughts on Murphy. Reginald Hudlin, who directed the actor in Boomerang (1992) and Candy Cane Lane (2023), was interviewed as well.
The film is directed by Angus Wall (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
“Eddie’s somebody that he feels he’s known who he is from the beginning,” Wall told USA Today in an interview about the film.
“He’s been on a path of destiny since he was a kid. He is an artist where he can express himself through many different ways, not just through comedy or acting, but through music and all these different things,” he added.
Wall said he started working on the movie in 2019 and was given “unprecedented access” when Murphy returned to host SNL that same year, after avoiding the NBC sketch series for three decades. After taking the stage, Murphy mocked SNL, telling the audience, “This is the last episode of 2019 but if you’re Black, this is the first episode since I left back in 1984.”
That night, Murphy brought Tracy Morgan, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle on stage for a reunion of Black comedy legends.
Fans will see and hear a lot more from Murphy when Being Eddie begins streaming Nov. 12, 2025 on Netflix.
The film is produced by John Davis, John Fox, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Terry Leonard, and Kent Kubena.
