Martin Lawrence takes on new technology and dysfunctional family members in the sci-fi comedy series Demascus, out today on Tubi.

Okieriete Onaodowan (Station 19) leads the cast as Demascus, a 33-year-old Black man on a journey of self-discovery, who tries using experimental technology to find himself.

In the trailer for the limited series, Demascus is shown in a therapy session with Dr. Bonnetville (Janet Hubert). At 33, he’s still trying to find his place in an “inhospitable” world.

The doctor introduces him to an experimental treatment called DIRT (Digital Immersive Reality Therapy). After the doctor places the DIRT device on his head, Demascus sees alternate versions of his life.

In one version, he’s in a relationship and “a lifetime of commitment.”

As the device becomes overwhelming, he considers opting out of the experiment.  The video shows him at a holiday dinner with rowdy relatives.

Martin Lawrence, who plays the elderly “Uncle Forty,” gets into an argument at the table with another aging family member who tells Forty “you’ve got one foot in the grave.”

“I’m about to put the other foot in your ass!” an annoyed Forty fires back.

The cast also includes Caleb Eberhardt (Judas and the Black Messiah), Shakira Ja’nai Paye (Single Drunk Female), and Lynn Whitfield (The Chi).

The six episode half-hour series comes from playwright Tearrance Chisholm and AMC Studios.

Tubi announced it had acquired the series in a press release on July 7.

“We’re excited to introduce audiences to Demascus — a bold, genre-bending blend of comedy and sci-fi that challenges conventions as much as it entertains,” Samuel Harowitz, senior vice president of content acquisition and partnerships said in a statement. “At Tubi, we champion stories that surprise, provoke, delight and resonate deeply with engaged fandoms, and Demascus is exactly the kind of original storytelling we’re proud to spotlight.”

Kirk A. Moore (American Crime, and For Life) and Chisholm serve as co-showrunners.

Mark Johnson (Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) executive produces through his Gran Via Productions banner.

“Through his titular character Demascus, Tearrance Chisholm asks one of life’s simplest questions: What does it take to be a good man? And he answers it with some of the most surprising and nuanced revelations one could expect,” said Johnson. “We thank AMC Studios for sharing our belief in this seriocomic series and Tubi for its steadfast conviction that it belongs on the air.”

Demascus premiered Aug. 7 on Tubi, which is a free, ad-supported streaming service owned by Fox.

Tubi rescued the completed series after AMC Networks canceled it in January 2023 amid budget cuts at the company, Deadline reported last month. The series was first announced in 2021.
