Mariah Carey belted out her current and past hits Sunday night at the MTV VMAs, where she was honored with the Video Vanguard Award.
After being introduced by Ariana Grande, the diva took the stage at New York’s UBS Arena in a gold robe that she later removed to reveal a form-fitting gold bodysuit with matching knee-high boots.
Surrounded by male dancers, she began the performance by lounging on a chair and sang her new hit single “Sugar Sweet.” Next, the music video from the remix of “Fantasy” featuring the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard began to play before she launched into “Heartbreaker.”
After that, the superstar singer performed her diss track “Obsessed,” along with “It’s Like That,” and “We Belong Together,” off her 2005 album The Emancipation of Mimi, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.
After the performance, she accepted the Video Vanguard Award and ribbed MTV about just now receiving her first time VMA.
“Thank you so much MTV for giving me the Vanguard Award. I can’t believe I’m getting my first VMA tonight. I just have one question,” Carey said. “What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?”
She reflected on the importance of music videos throughout her career.
“Music videos are my way of life, of bringing music to my own life, mini-movies visualizing the sheer fantasy of it all.” she explained. “After all this time, I’ve learned that music evolves, videos evolve, but the fun? That is eternal.”
Carey picked up a second VMA for Best R&B for “Type Dangerous” off of her upcoming 16th studio album titled Here For It All, out Sept. 26.
Last month when MTV announced Carey would receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, the cable channel noted that she’s won five career Grammy Awards and sold more than 220 million albums since she broke into the music business.
