Love Jones stars Nia Long and Larenz Tate will share the screen in an upcoming Netflix film inspired by one of the most romantic R&B albums of all time.

The streaming service announced the news on Wednesday, Oct. 15, saying the two stars will lead the cast of an untitled romantic drama inspired by R&B legend Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite album.

The two actors previously co-starred in the iconic 1997 Theodore Witcher-directed film Love Jones, about a poet and photographer in Chicago exploring their budding relationship. The film also starred Isaiah Washington, Lisa Nicole Carson, and Bill Bellamy.

More recently, Tate was part of the cast of the Starz crime series Power and the spinoff Power Book II: Ghost, which ended its four season run in October 2024.  Next, he’ll be seen in Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael, as Motown founder Berry Gordy.

Long also has a role in Michael as family matriarch Katherine Jackson. In 2022, she starred in the Peacock miniseries, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, along with other original cast members from the hit franchise. In 2023, she had roles in the films You People and Missing.

Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite was released in 1996, and includes the ultra-romantic singles “Suitelady (The Proposal Jam),” “Whenever Wherever Whatever,” and “Til the Cops Come Knockin’.”

In the press release obtained by Urban Hollywood 411, Netflix was coy about the new film’s plot, saying it’s “being kept under wraps.”

Emmy nominated writer-director Eugene Ashe (Sylvie’s Love) is helming the movie from a script he co-wrote with Emmy-nominated writer Kay Oyegun (This Is Us).

Maxwell, John D. Hammond, Nia Long, and Larenz Tate are all executive producers. James Lopez, Charles D. King, and Poppy Hanks for MACRO Film Studios are all producers.

The feature film was just greenlit, so it will be a while before it begins streaming.
