Jimmy Kimmel says President Trump sank to a new low with his “vile” reaction to the murder of director and actor Rob Reiner.
Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead inside their Los Angeles mansion on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14. Hours later, the LAPD arrested the couple’s son Nick Reiner, 32, who remains in custody.
Trump reacted to the killings with a controversial post on Truth Social Monday morning about Reiner — a liberal who has been critical of Trump’s policies.

Trump called Reiner “tortured and struggling,” and said the filmmaker “passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”
Kimmel reacted to Trump’s post Monday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The late-night host called Reiner a “patriot” and described him as one of the nation’s greatest directors. But the comedian had nothing good to say about Trump.
“What we need in a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental health care, is compassion and leadership,” Kimmel said. “We did not get that from our president, because he has none of it to give. Instead, we got a fool rambling about nonsense.”
He then bashed Trump for saying the Reiners “passed away,” instead of acknowledging that they were brutally killed.
“His description of what happened, of course, is not at all what happened, and this is exactly what I’ve spoken about before, this rush to pin the tail on the donkey in pursuit of the Trump-friendly narrative,” Kimmel said. “Not to mention blaming his death on the fact that he is an outspoken liberal, insulting someone who’s just been murdered, who leaves children behind without having any idea of what actually happened. It’s so hateful and vile.”
The comedian called Trump a “sick” man and urged his supporters to “wake up.”
“That corroded brain is in charge of our lives,” Kimmel added. “If you voted for that, it’s OK to reconsider… I know from my personal interactions with Rob Reiner that he would want us to keep pointing out the loathsome atrocities that continue to ooze out of this sick and irresponsible man’s mouth. And so we’re going to do that, over and over again, until the rest of us wake up.”
Trump doubled down on his comments and later on Monday described Reiner as “deranged” while speaking to reporters at the White House.
Reiner’s death has left Hollywood in shock.
Urban Hollywood 411 was outside the director’s home on Sunday night as police briefed reporters. A few of Reiner’s neighbors attended the briefing — some expressed sadness while others said they were worried about their safety after the killings. At the time, police wouldn’t say they had identified a suspect but they assured residents the murders were isolated.
Nick Reiner was expected to make his first court appearance today, but his attorney Alan Jackson said his client has not yet been medically cleared to appear in court. Nick has a history of substance abuse and mental health issues.
