Jenifer Lewis Shares Behind-the-Scenes Details on ‘A Different World’ Reboot

Jenifer Lewis had a role on A Different World in the 1990s. Now she’s returning to Hillman College for Netflix’s upcoming reboot of the comedy series.

We spoke with Lewis at the 12th Annual Truth Awards presented by Better Brothers Los Angeles on Saturday, March 21, in Beverly Hills.

The actress and singer shared a few details with Urban Hollywood 411 about the reboot from executive producers Felicia Pride and Debbie Allen.

“I have been on set and it’s fabulous, Debbie Allen is everything. It’s like no time has passed. Everybody is still young, healthy and beautiful, and the scripts are great,” Lewis said on the red carpet.

“It was a fun time down in Atlanta,” she added about the filming.

Lewis is reprising her role as “Dean Davenport” on the reboot.

Allen produced, directed, and had a role in the original series, and is directing the sequel.

Original stars Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, and Cree Summer are all returning for the sequel, along Charnele Brown and Jada Pinkett Smith.

The new series follows “Deborah Wayne,” youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne (Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Guy). Deborah is now a student at fictional HBCU Hillman College, and “finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape as she sets out to build her own legacy.” A premiere date will be announced later.

Lewis was at the Truth Awards to receive the Ally Award for her advocacy and support of the Black LGBTQ+ community.

The night’s other honorees included journalist Don Lemon; television producer Carlos King; entertainer and comedian Flame Monroe; Grammy-winning artist Durand Bernarr; filmmaker and actress Nneka Onuorah; and scholar Dr. Keith Green.

Vivica A. Fox hosted the ceremony and Grammy winner Lalah Hathaway led the performances.

Each year Better Brothers Los Angeles (BBLA) members present the awards in partnership with Sheryl Lee Ralph’s DIVA Foundation.
