Don Lemon will be recognized next month at the 12th Annual Truth Awards in Beverly Hills, for his “unwavering dedication to journalism that informs, challenges, and inspires change.”
Each year the awards are presented by Better Brothers Los Angeles (BBLA), in partnership with actress and activist Sheryl Lee Ralph’s DIVA Foundation.
On Tuesday, Feb. 17, the two groups announced Lemon will be presented with a lifetime achievement award at a star-studded gala on March 21.
The recognition comes after Lemon was arrested by federal agents on Jan. 29, in connection with his coverage of an anti-ICE protest inside a church in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The former CNN anchor now works as an independent journalist and streamed coverage of the protest live on his YouTube channel.
The Justice Department alleged Lemon and several others at the protest, including local journalist Georgia Fort, violated the FACE Act, which prohibits interfering with someone’s access to reproductive health services or religious worship.
Lemon countered that he was simply covering the news and vowed to defend his first amendment rights. He pleaded not guilty in federal court on Feb. 13, and called the charges “baseless.”
This year’s Truth Awards will also honor Grammy-winning artist Durand Bernarr with a Music & Arts Award for “redefining musical expression through bold creativity and vocal excellence.”
Reality television producer and podcaster Carlos King will receive the Media & Arts Award for his “groundbreaking contributions to storytelling and representation.”
Award-winning actress Jenifer Lewis will be presented with the Ally Award for her “outspoken advocacy, commitment to inclusivity, and fearless pursuit of equity and acceptance.”
“Honoring those who have shaped our world through their truth emphasizes a compelling narrative for future generations,” Scott Hamilton, co-founder of Better Brothers Los Angeles, said in a statement.
“Celebrating these pioneers is not just an acknowledgment; it’s a call to action,” added Sheryl Lee Ralph. “Their stories energize us to break through complacency, demonstrating that true change demands fearless vision and unwavering dedication.”
Lemon’s star has continued to rise since his arrest.
On Feb. 2 the veteran journalist appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and said the Trump administration took him into custody to “embarrass” him.
“I’m not going to let them steal my joy, but this is serious,” Lemon told host Jimmy Kimmel.
