Domestic violence was “at the core” of DC sniper John Allen Muhammad’s deadly rampage, experts share in the upcoming Investigation Discovery documentary, Hunted by My Husband.

Premiering on Oct. 28, the film centers on Muhammad’s second ex-wife, Mildred Muhammad, as she tells a story of “manipulation, control, and domestic abuse.”

Mildred divorced Muhammad in 1999, and is now an author, certified domestic violence advocate, and member of the Maryland Board of Victim Services.

In October 2002, Muhammad and his then-teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, went on a rampage in the Washington, D.C. region, killing ten people and injuring several others.

“On October 2, 2002, a sniper’s bullet struck down a 55-year-old man in a parking lot in Wheaton, Maryland. By 10 o’clock the next morning, four more people within a few miles of each other had been similarly murdered,” the FBI said on its website, noting that the attacks were soon linked.

In the trailer for the documentary, Mildred says the FBI told her she “was the target.” At some point during the killing spree, Muhammad reportedly planned to take her life so he could have custody of their three children.

She had a restraining order against Muhammad after convincing authorities he was dangerous.

The film includes previously unreleased home video of the Muhammad family, along with interviews with Mildred, domestic violence experts, and law enforcement officers who worked to track down and identify the snipers.

The documentary is airing as part of ID’s “No Excuse for Abuse” campaign during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which ends Oct. 31.

“By shining a light on the hidden realities of domestic violence in all its forms, our annual No Excuse for Abuse campaign is designed to empower survivors, educate viewers, and help break the silence that allows abuse to persist,” Jason Sarlanis, president of ID, said in a statement to Urban Hollywood 411.

Mildred testified in Muhammad’s trial and described him as abusive and “controlling,” CNN reported.

“He was the disciplinarian sometimes, but his tactics were that he had to have complete control,” she told the court.

Mildred said in testimony that she once spotted a dark-colored Chevy Caprice or Impala outside home in Clinton, Maryland. Concerned, she called police and reported the unidentified driver “just sat and stared,” while a passenger raised a newspaper to conceal his face.

Muhammad and Malvo were later arrested in a blue Chevrolet Caprice. Following their convictions, Mildred’s ex-husband was put to death by lethal injection in 2009. Meantime, Lee Boyd Malvo is serving a life sentence without parole.

The film on Mildred Muhammad is produced for Investigation Discovery by Lion Television, an All3Media Company, in association with MarksMediaCo. and Red Sky Entertainment.

Hunted by My Husband premieres Oct. 28 from 9-11PM ET/PT on ID. You can watch the trailer here.
