A dispute between roommates led to the killing of Baltimore comedian Reggie Carroll.
Carroll, 52, was fatally shot at a house on Burton Lane in Southaven, Mississippi on Aug. 20. Responding officers arrested Tranell Williams immediately after the shooting and he was charged with murder.
At a news conference in Southaven on Wednesday, Aug. 27, local authorities offered new details on the investigation into Carroll’s death.

DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton revealed Carroll and Tranell Williams were roommates and lived together at the house where the shooting occurred.
“This was an incident between two roommates that knew each other. One of them is from California. One of them is from Maryland,” Barton told reporters. “This is not indicative of a violent crime issue in our city.”
Carroll toured this year with Katt Williams on his “Heaven on Earth Tour,” and frequently posted pictures and videos from their tour stops on social media.
Southaven is a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee.
Local news station Fox 13 Memphis reported the shooting occurred at a house where a company called Onyxx Owll, LLC is located. The website for the company says it’s “The official Merchandise Store for Katt Williams.”
Fox 13 and WREG News Channel CBS 3 reported that Trenell Williams worked security for Katt Williams — with both the suspect and the victim employed by the superstar comedian.
“Based on their jobs and their professions in the comedy world, they obviously ran in the same circles with the same comedians,” the district attorney said about Carroll and Trenell Williams. “I want it to be clear that there’s never been any reason, before or now, to believe that any of those comedians or business organizations were involved in any way.”
Other than knowing the two men, the district attorney said Katt Williams had no connection to the case.
“The house is not owned by Katt Williams. It was a rental property. Another out of state company is leasing the house. Trenell Williams and Reggie Carroll were the two tenants of the house,” he said. “Katt Williams was not there. We have no reason to believe he was ever involved in any way, shape, or form.”
When pressed by reporters, the DA declined to give a motive for the shooting. Although he did talk about the type of gun that was used.
“The defendant used a shotgun to shoot multiple times at the victim, he used a 12-gauge. The ammo choice was slugs,” Barton said, adding that Carroll suffered “multiple wounds.”
