Oh no she didn’t!
That was Colman Domingo’s reaction in a new promo for this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live, when cast member Veronika Slowikowska attempted the “Soulja Boy dance.”
Things got off to a rocky start as soon as Slowikowska approached Domingo. The comedian was determined to impress the first-time SNL host and tried to convince him to approve some of her sketch ideas.
The comic started off by pitching an idea about playing the Emmy-winning actor’s “super loud” upstairs neighbor, who’s being attacked by one of NYC’s notorious rats. She placed a plastic rodent on her shoulder and started to freak out.
“I already hate this idea. It’s the worst idea I’ve ever heard,” Domingo said to himself, but decided not to hurt Slowikowska’s feelings and claimed he “loved” the pitch.
“Is it too late to switch to SNL UK?” the actor asked himself as the pitches got worse.
The situation really unraveled when Slowikowska whipped out a cane and started to tap dance. She then ditched the cane, raised her arms and attempted the dance that rapper Soulja Boy made famous with his “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” music video.
“Is she doing the Soulja Boy?!” Domingo said. “Maybe if I tell someone she tried to kiss me she’ll get fired.”
Soulja Boy and his crew ignited a hip-hop dance craze in 2007, by jumping, cranking their wrists like motorcycle riders, and lunging into a Superman pose.
It will be interesting to see if Slowikowska’s version of the dance makes it into the script when Domingo makes his SNL hosting debut on April 11. Brazilian singer-songwriter Anitta serves as musical guest.
Domingo has a role in the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, which arrives in theaters on April 24. He also stars in the new seasons of Netflix’s The Four Seasons and HBO’s Euphoria.
You can catch him on SNL Saturday, airing on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT and streaming live on Peacock.
