The Bosch franchise is expanding with prequel series Bosch: Start of Watch, chronicling the origins of legendary LAPD detective Harry Bosch.
Amazon MGM Studios announced details on the series this week, saying Cameron Monaghan (Shameless and Gotham) has been cast as a young Harry Bosch alongside Omari Hardwick (Star Trek: Section 31 and Power) as veteran Officer Eli Bridges.
The drama is scheduled to start production in Los Angeles in 2026, and will later stream on MGM+.
Bosch: Start of Watch is set in 1991, when a 26-year-old Harry Bosch was a rookie cop. He’s learning the ropes, just before the Los Angeles riots erupt following the acquittal of four LAPD officers charged with using excessive force in the arrest and videotaped beating of Black motorist Rodney King.
“The series will explore a city on the edge, teeming with racial tension, gang violence, and a fractured LAPD. Amid routine calls and growing unrest, Bosch finds himself drawn into a high-profile heist and a web of criminal corruption that will test his loyalty to the badge and shape his future,” according to the official description.

The Bosch character is based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling book series that spawned Bosch, starring Titus Welliver [shown above in the middle].
“We are thrilled to expand the Bosch universe with this compelling origin story that showcases how one of television’s most beloved detectives became the man we know today,” Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said in a statement. “Bosch: Start of Watch promises to deliver the gritty, authentic storytelling that honors the franchise’s legacy while opening an exciting new chapter.”
Connelly added that he’s looking forward to the character returning to TV.
“I’m deeply grateful to Michael Wright and the team at MGM+ for championing this next chapter in Bosch’s journey with such remarkable care and integrity,” said Connelly. “Being able to see how Harry Bosch became the man we have loved for 10 seasons is a gift to me and his many fans. I can’t wait to dig in with Cameron and the writers to explore this uncharted character territory.”
Bosch ran for seven seasons on Prime Video from 2014 to 2021. The series ended with a fed up Bosch leaving the LAPD to become a private investigator. But his story wasn’t over and continued with Bosch: Legacy, which ran for three seasons and starred Welliver, Mimi Rogers, Madison Lintz, Stephen A. Chang, and Denise G. Sanchez.
The new young Bosch character is described as intensely observant. He “possesses all the qualities that will come to mark his legendary career: he’s smart, relentless, determined, fiercely protective of the victims of crime.”
The Bridges character is “a Vietnam vet, a seasoned, salty, rough-around-the-edges kind of cop who mentors Harry through the mean streets of Los Angeles and the complicated world of the LAPD.
Bosch: Start of Watch is co-created and executive produced by Tom Bernardo and Brian Anthony, with Bernardo serving as showrunner. Michael Connelly, Henrik Bastin, Jamie Boscardin Martin, and Jasmine Russ are also executive producers. Theresa Snider serves as co-executive producer for Hieronymus Pictures. A premiere date will be announced later.
