Ms. Pat promises to bring unfiltered commentary to VH1, as the network reboots 1990s fan favorite America’s Funniest People.
The new version features content creators going head-to-head with videos showing jokes, stunts, pranks and questionable decisions as they compete for a $5,000 cash prize, the network announced Wednesday.
The series premieres Nov. 16, with Ms. Pat hosting the competition.
The show comes from V10 Entertainment, the production company behind America’s Funniest Home Videos.
“Ms. Pat is a force of nature, and BET Studios knows firsthand the energy and authenticity she brings to everything she does,” Josh Vodnoy, V10 Entertainment’s co-head of global licensing and distribution, said in a statement.
For Ms. Pat, the format offers another chance to say what’s on her mind.
“I’m truly thankful to continue expanding my partnership with Paramount, VH1, and BET Studios, and to start a new relationship with V10 Entertainment,” she said in a statement. “I love that America’s Funniest People is a real clip show with a whole lot of Ms. Pat in it. It’s funny, and I get to do what I do best – say what everybody else is thinking.”
The original America’s Funniest People aired on ABC from 1990 to 1994, and was co-hosted by Dave Coulier alongside Arleen Sorkin (and later Tawny Kitaen).
Instead of the ’90s focus on VHS home videos, Ms. Pat’s version pivots to online content.
The comedian, whose full name is Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams-Lee, already has a busy slate with sister network BET. She is returning for a sixth season of The Ms. Pat Show and a fourth season of courtroom series Ms. Pat Settles It, according to the announcement.
The new version of America’s Funniest People is executive produced by Williams-Lee, John Stevens, Carter Skeath and Rick De Oliveira. Saterah Moore serves as co-executive producer.
The series premieres Nov. 16, with two back-to-back episodes at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.
