Universal Pictures has released the first photos of Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in character for its upcoming Miami Vice remake.

The studio posted the pictures on social media Monday, saying the film titled Miami Vice ’85 is now in production.

Oscar winner Jordan plays Detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, while Oscar nominee Butler portrays Detective James “Sonny” Crockett from the iconic 1980s series Miami Vice.

The photos show Jordan dressed in a black leather jacket, with a matching black shirt and checkered tie. He stares seriously into the camera while holding a small revolver.

The actor seems overdressed for the Miami heat. But the film is inspired by the first season of Miami Vice, which saw former NYPD detective Tubbs leave New York for Miami.

Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) is directing the film from a script he worked on with Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy) and Top Gun: Maverick collaborator Eric Warren Singer.

Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, although it’s been reported that the drama “will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami.”

Universal plans to release the film in May 2028.

Created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann, the trend-setting television series aired on NBC for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. Don Johnson starred as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas played Tubbs.

The show followed undercover vice detectives in Miami as they investigated drug trafficking and other serious crimes in the ’80s. The series was known for its pastel-colored fashions, fast cars, celebrity cameos and using popular music.

A previous movie adaptation from Michael Mann starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. The film was released in 2006 and received mixed reviews from critics. It earned $164 million at the worldwide box office against a reported $135 million production budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
