Nearly nine months after former child star Kianna Underwood was struck and killed while crossing a street in New York City, police have made an arrest in the case.
Brooklyn resident Michael Griffiths, 72, was taken into custody on Tuesday, Sept. 29, and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and leaving the scene of an accident with injury, the New York Post reported, citing the NYPD.
Underwood, 33, was crossing a street in Brooklyn early on Jan. 16 when she was struck by an SUV and then a second vehicle.
Surveillance footage showed a Ford SUV crossing the double yellow line to pass another vehicle before hitting Underwood. The second vehicle then struck her and dragged her several hundred feet, according to the Post.
Three days after the crash, police seized the SUV and began processing the vehicle for evidence, CBS New York reported.
At the time, investigators said they did not have enough evidence to determine if the owner was driving when the crash occurred. The owner requested an attorney and declined to answer questions. Police said Griffiths was driving the vehicle.
Underwood was a former child actress known for her work on Nickelodeon’s All That and the animated series Little Bill.
According to her IMDb page, she appeared in seven episodes of All That between 2004 and 2005.
The children’s sketch comedy series had a rotating cast that included Amanda Bynes, Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, and Nick Cannon.
Underwood, who was a New York native, also had roles in the film The 24-Hour Woman (1999) and the TV movie Santa, Baby! (2001).
In the years before her death, she had been experiencing homelessness and was known to residents in the neighborhood.
