A prison riot brings a single mother and an inmate together in Tyler Perry’s new film Doing Life.
Naomi Baker (All American: Homecoming) leads the cast as Anika, opposite Jay Reeves (Nemesis) who plays ex-convict Carousel.
In the trailer, Anika reveals the two met while she was working at a correctional facility. When a riot broke out, Carousel made sure she got out alive. “He saved me and my baby’s life,” she says.
Carousel shares he was sent to prison for a crime that happened when he was a 14-year-old gang member. Despite their different circumstances, Anika and Carousel forge an unexpected bond.
The official description reads, “A single mother fighting to survive and a reformed ex-con with untapped talent find in each other an unlikely second chance.”
The cast also includes Tamberla Perry, Karen Obilom, Jasmine Sargent, Lucky Johnson and Danielle Moné Truitt.
Perry wrote and directed Doing Life, and recently shared his excitement about the project in an Instagram post.
“One of the things I really love doing is introducing new talent to you all,” he wrote. “The performances that these kids put down in my next film are going to blow your mind. Some of you may not know their names now but I promise you won’t forget them after you see DOING LIFE!!”
The drama is part of Perry’s first-look feature deal with Netflix, which has also included The Six Triple Eight, Straw, Joe’s College Road Trip, Madea’s Destination Wedding, and Why Did I Get Married Again?
The filmmaker produced the new movie alongside Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland. The urban drama arrives just weeks after Why Did I Get Married Again?, which quickly rose to the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s English-language movie chart.
Doing Life is slated to premiere Oct. 2 on Netflix. You can watch the trailer for the film here.
