‘God With Us’ Reimagines the Nativity Story in Urban America

A new faith-based drama is headed to theaters this fall.

God With Us is a modern-day retelling of the Nativity story centering on inner-city childhood sweethearts Mary Anne Thomas and Joseph “Junie” Love.

In the newly released trailer, a pregnant Mary Anne faces backlash for insisting “I’m a virgin.” Her father calls her a liar and Junie accuses her of cheating on him.

The official description for the film reads, “A young woman in an impossible position. A young man torn between trust and faith. A birth that could change the world.”

Ashley Olivia Fisher (Average Joe) and Aspen Kennedy (The Forge) lead the cast as Mary Anne and Junie, whose lives suddenly change when they embark on a “divine mission.” As the two face uncertainty, their faith is tested and they discover the power of unconditional love.

The ensemble cast also includes Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Rotimi (Power), Roger Guenveur Smith (Do the Right Thing), Ashley Rios (Cross), Gregory Alan Williams (Remember the Titans), and Clifton Powell (Ray).

Written and directed by Jimmy Jenkins, the drama explores faith, family, and maintaining hope in difficult times. It marks Jenkins’ second feature film following Sinners Wanted.

In an Instagram post earlier this year, Jenkins opened up about the challenges he faced while bringing the film to the screen.

“Never have I ever invested this much, never have I ever lost this much, never have I ever been through so much trying to get a project done,” he wrote.

Jenkins said there were days when he considered giving up. He also addressed the pushback he faced for depicting Jesus as a person of color.

“I’ve seen so many negative comments about us making a film with a Jesus who is a person of color it has disturbed me so much. But one thing I know, the most used phrase in the Bible that’s constantly repeated over and over again is ‘Do not fear,’” the filmmaker added.

God With Us opens in select theaters on Nov. 13, 2026. You can watch the trailer here.
