Will Smith is preparing for his next big acting job. The actor took to social media on May 14, to announce he will star in the upcoming action thriller Supermax.
Smith included a shot of the script from writers David Weil and David J. Rosen, with text on screen saying the movie is “crazy!”
The drama tells the story of two FBI agents investigating a baffling murder in the world’s most secure prison. Smith will lead the cast as a character named “Rex” in the “propulsive and twist-laden action thriller,” according to Variety.
David Gordon Green (The Exorcist: Believer and Halloween) is directing the film. His previous credits include Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), and The Exorcist: Believer (2023).
Additional casting is currently underway, with production expected to start in mid-August.
Smith’s production company, Westbrook Studios, and Miramax are producing the thriller. Westbrook shared on social media “we are thrilled to be teaming up with director David Gordon Green.”
Amazon MGM Studios reportedly shelled out $70 million for global rights to release Supermax on Prime Video, with plans to skip theaters.
The thriller marks Smith’s first major movie role since Bad Boys: Ride or Die with Martin Lawrence in 2024. The fourth installment of the Bad Boys franchise earned $404.5 million worldwide
The actor most recently appeared in the series finale of Peacock’s Bel-Air in December 2025.
Smith, who played the original Fresh Prince, was shown in a surprise cameo offering reassuring words to Jabari Banks’ “Will,” as the high school senior prepared for the next chapter of his life. “Trust me, you’re going to mess some things up,” Smith told Banks.
The Oscar-winning actor executive produced the reimagined series, which ran for four seasons on the streaming platform.
In an interview with Urban Hollywood 411 in December, Cassandra Freeman, who played aunt Vivian Banks on Bel-Air, said the series accomplished something rare.
“There’s no other show on Peacock that’s made it to four seasons. So, it feels really sweet to be at this position,” she explained.
