After rising to fame as James “Ghost” St. Patrick on Power, Omari Hardwick says his most important role has been as a father.

The actor sits down to talk family, fatherhood and his career on the season 3 finale of TV One’s autobiographical series Uncensored.

“Fatherhood is just massive for me,” Hardwick said in a clip from the episode. “There’s nothing more.”

“The greatest role I’ve ever played is that of being their father. I can’t play a better role than that,” he continued.

Hardwick compared being a dad to his role as James “Ghost” St. Patrick on the Starz drama Power.

“It comes with all the same complications that playing Ghost came with, all the same. Why we rooted for Ghost because this guy was rooting for himself. We root for people that root for themselves,” he said.

He remains committed to staying present in his children’s lives.

“We’re here so quick. I just don’t want them to look up, and go, ‘Who are you?’ I don’t want that,” he explained.

The actor was born in Savannah, Georgia, the son of Joyce and Clifford Hardwick III, an attorney, and says he learned the true value of family when he was growing up.

Hardwick excelled in sports, which eventually led him to a football scholarship for University of Georgia. He minored in theater and focused on poetry. After graduation, Hardwick pursued a career in football, hoping to join the San Diego Chargers.

But when he wasn’t picked up in the NFL Draft, he returned to acting. As a struggling actor, Hardwick said he did odd jobs to pay for acting classes. After living in his car, he finally got his big break in the 2004 TV movie Sucker Free City, and eventually Power.

The season 3 finale of Uncensored featuring Omari Hardwick airs Sunday, Oct. 18 at 10 P.M. ET/9C on TV One, followed by an encore presentation at 11 P.M. ET/10C.
