Lifetime has ordered a scripted miniseries on hip-hop pioneers Salt-N-Pepa, the cable network announced Wednesday.
The project titled Salt-N-Pepa, will tell the story of nursing students Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton as they rise to success in the male-dominated rap industry, the cable network said in a press release.
Denton and James will serve as producers on the miniseries and have licensed their music, including the hit singles “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “What a Man,” “Shoop” and “Push It.”
Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere of Flavor Unit have signed on as executive producers, along with Jesse Collins (The New Edition Story). Abdul Williams (The New Edition Story) is writing the script.

Lifetime also announced it’s readying a made-for-TV movie about gospel group The Clark Sisters.
The authorized movie titled Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel will detail their rise from humble beginnings in Detroit as they endured abuse, loss, rejection, betrayal, and sibling rivalries to become one of the best-selling gospel groups in the world. The original film will feature recordings of The Clark Sisters’ music.
Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, and Missy Elliott will serve as executive produces, with Christine Swanson (Chicago P.D.) directing.
“Bringing untold stories of phenomenal women to life has been a core tenant of Lifetime,” said Tanya Lopez, EVP of Movies, Limited Series & Original Movie Acquisitions at Lifetime and LMN. “We are thrilled to partner with Cheryl, Sandra, Queen Latifah, Mary, Missy and The Clark Sisters for the new projects that will showcase these iconic women in music to new audiences.”
Both projects will debut in 2020.
