Netflix has ordered a new series about the world of Mexican billionaires titled Monarca, the streaming giant announced Tuesday.
Produced by Salma Hayek’s Ventanarosa Productions, Lemon Studios and Stearns Castle, the drama will follow a multi-generational family saga about a tequila-based Mexican business empire.
“I’m extremely excited to partner with Netflix, and to be working with amazing Mexican talent in front of and behind the camera,” Hayek said in a statement.
Monarca showrunner Diego Gutierrez added that the creative team is assembling talent “both in The US and Mexico.”

Mexican actors Irene Azuela and Juan Manuel Bernal are set to lead the cast, with production starting in the fall.
Netflix described the series as a look at the world of “wealthy Mexican elites riddled by corruption, scandal and violence.”
The drama will debut globally in 2019.
Hayek’s company also produced Ugly Betty, the animated 2014 film Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, and
the 2001 TV movie, In the Time of the Butterflies.
