Longtime television news executive Renee Washington has been upped to vice president of news at KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, the station announced Thursday.
“Renee’s experience as a news leader in major markets like Los Angeles and New York will enhance our already strong newscasts,” said Steve Carlston, the station’s president and general manager. “Her knowledge of Southern California, dedication and commitment to quality journalism makes her the ideal leader for our news team.”
Added Washington: “To lead an exceptional group of news professionals who value diversity and are telling the stories that matter to Southern Californians is my priority. It’s a privilege to work alongside NBC4’s experienced and legendary anchors and reporters.”

Washington replaces former KNBC news chief, Todd Mokhtari, who in March was named president and general manager of NBC 7/KNSD-TV and Telemundo 20/KUAN, which fall under the NBCUniversal umbrella.
She joined KNBC last fall as assistant news director, and co-directed all news gathering operations, digital and social media strategies for the station. Prior to her hiring, she worked in Philadelphia, New York City, and as assistant news director at KABC-TV in L.A.
Washington has more than two decades of experience. Among the other places she has worked are Cleveland, Ohio; Tampa, Florida; and in her home state of Indiana.
She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University in Indiana, and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
