Cats is based on Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot. It follows a tribe of felines called the Jellicles and “the Jellicle choice,” when they decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.  Elba will play Macavity, the villain in the story.

The popular musical is one of the longest-running shows on Broadway.

The movie version will be directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper, who previously helmed the movie adaptation of Les Misérables. Production on Cats will begin later this year in London.
