Growing up in decaying Southwest Detroit, BMF founders Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and his brother, Terry “Southwest T” Flenory, faced poverty and rising drug use in their neighborhood.

Before the siblings started the notorious Black Mafia Family in the 1980s, they were kids dealing with problems at home.

In the exclusive clip below for The BMF Documentary: Blowing Money Fast, their mother Lucille Flenory breaks down in tears as she recalls the family was struggling financially and her divorce from Charles Flenory prompted her sons to become drug dealers.

“I don’t think any of my children were happy about it, but I think our divorce really affected Demetrius,” Lucille says. “He was feeling like, ‘okay, now I’m the man of the household.’ He kind of had the way of, ‘I want to help take care of my mom.'”

In a phone interview from prison, Demetrius says he started hustling to bring in extra money because the family was about to lose their home.

“That was it right there. We had to get on the ball, we had to do something,” he says.

Demetrius and Terry later became key players in the world of drug trafficking and money laundering. But eventually they landed on the DEA’s radar and were sent to prison.

The eight-part docuseries tells their story.
