Aretha Franklin Funeral and Public Viewing Details Announced

The dates of the funeral service and public viewing for Aretha Franklin have been set.

The Queen of Soul’s funeral will take place at Greater Grace Temple in her hometown of Detroit on Aug. 31.

The private service will only be open to family and friends, Franklin’s publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, told The Associated Press. The funeral is expected to draw musicians, dignitaries and other high-profile figures.

Public viewings will be held at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Aug. 28 and Aug. 29.

Franklin will be buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit with her father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, her sisters Carolyn Franklin and Erma Franklin, her brother Cecil Franklin and nephew Thomas Garrett.

Organizers are also working on a special tribute service honoring Franklin, with details to be announced later.

The legendary singer died Thursday at her home in Detroit after battling pancreatic cancer. She was 76.
