Halle Berry Says She’s Still Asked to ‘Prove’ Herself as a Black Woman in Hollywood

ABC News celebrates Black History Month with two new specials including Soul of a Nation: Screen Queens Rising which explores the impact of Black actresses in Hollywood.

The special features interviews with leading Black actresses, including Halle Berry. In the trailer, Berry says despite her success she still has to prove herself.

“I feel like I am someone who is always asked to prove themselves, over and over and over again. I’m always having to prove [myself],” she says.

Tessa Thompson, Debbie Allen, Jackée Harry, Marla Gibbs and Regina Hall are also featured in the special, ABC announced in a press release.

“While we remain dedicated to telling the impactful and important stories around the Black community all year long, ABC News will provide special coverage throughout February to salute Black excellence,” Kim Godwin, president of ABC News, said in a statement. “We will celebrate and honor Black culture across all programs and platforms, taking an in-depth look at issues past and present.”

Following the airing of Screen Queens Rising, the special X / o n e r a t e d – The Murder of Malcolm X and 55 Years to Justice will discuss the men who were wrongfully accused of Malcolm X’s murder.

For the first time since being exonerated, Muhammad Abdul Aziz speaks publicly about how he felt when the guilty verdict came down, and what it was like to be in prison for five decades for a crime he did not commit.

“They didn’t believe it as they don’t believe us,” Aziz said during the powerful trailer about having his alibi overlooked by investigators.

Soul of a Nation: Screen Queens Rising airs Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC followed by Soul of a Nation: X / o n e r a t e d – The Murder of Malcolm X and 55 Years to Justice at 9 p.m. EST.
