Jeffrey Toobin is back in front of the camera as CNN’s chief legal analyst after he was suspended last year for exposing himself on a Zoom call with colleagues at The New Yorker.

Toobin spoke about the incident Thursday during an interview with CNN Newsroom anchor Alisyn Camerota, and said he spent “miserable months” off air “trying to be a better person” by going to therapy, volunteering at a food bank and writing an upcoming book on the Oklahoma City bombing.

“I’m sorry to the people who read my work and who watched me on CNN who thought I was a better person than this. And so, you know, I got a lot to rebuild, but I feel very privileged and very lucky that I’m going to be able to try to do that,” he said.

As previously reported in November, the legal analyst got the boot from his job as a staff writer at The New Yorker after he colleagues said they saw him masturbating during an election simulation Zoom meeting between staffers at the publication and WNYC radio.

CNN on the other hand decided to place Toobin on leave and eventually welcome him back. A CNN spokesperson confirmed in an article published by the network that he would keep his job.

Toobin understood his viewers, followers and others would have mixed reactions to seeing him on air again.

“I live in the world. I know social media, what the reactions are likely to be,” he said. “I hope they will at least be mixed. People can claim what they want, but I don’t think there is anything further that’s gonna come out.”

Toobin, 61, has been working as a legal analyst with the cable news network since 2002.
