Chadwick Boseman and Andra Day have a chance to pick up Oscars after they received nominations Monday morning for the 93rd Academy Awards.

Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her singer-actor husband Nick Jonas announced the nominees live from London.

While Judas and the Black Messiah was the only Black-led film in the best picture category, several Black performers received nominations in acting categories.

Boseman was posthumously nominated in the best actor category for his role as musician Levee Green in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. During the current awards season, Boseman has already won best actor awards from the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Association and the Los Angeles Films Critics Association.

At next month’s Oscars, he’ll compete against Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Steven Yeun.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom was Boseman’s final film role before he died at age 43 last August after battling colon cancer.

Day, who plays legendary blues icon Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, was nominated for best actress Monday and will compete against Viola Davis, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand, and Carey Mulligan.
In the best supporting actor category, three Black actors have been nominated for their roles. Daniel Kaluuya picked up a nomination for his role as Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Lakeith Stanfield was nominated in the category for his role as FBI informant William O’Neal in the film alongside Kaluuya. Leslie Odom, Jr. has been nominated for his portrayal of Sam Cooke in One Night in Miami.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Paul Raci are also nominated in the category.

In the best supporting actress category, Maria Bakalova is nominated for her role in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. She’ll compete against Glenn Close for her role in Hillbilly Elegy, Olivia Colman for her role in The Father, Amanda Seyfried for her role in Mank and Yuh-Jung Youn for her role in Minari.

This year’s Oscars will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood in a socially distanced ceremony.
